Q: WHAT THE FLIP IS THAT LIGHTNING CABLE DOING COMING OUT OF YOUR PHONE IS IT CHARGING THE PHONE? IS IT CONNECTED TO THE REMOTE? WHAT IS IT?
A: First off; no, it isn’t connected to my controller. It is connected to my MacBook Pro simply so that I can record my iPhone screen with Quicktime Player. I do this because, at the time of recording this video, there were not any natively supported solutions to record an iPhone screen.
Q: What app is that? Why does mine not look the same?
A: The app is “DJI GO” and is used to connect to any DJI drones. The app is supported on both iPhone and Android. However, they do appear different between the two operating systems so that may be why your app looks different.
Q: Where are the recorded videos stored?
A: It really depends on your drone. For the DJI Phantom 3 Standard, they are located on a micro SD card which is placed in the camera of the drone itself that stores all the videos/photos recorded. The drone when you first buy it comes with a free included 8GB micro SD card :).
Q: How did you shoot in 4K from a 2.7k camera? What are your camera settings?
A: The simple answer is I didn’t. The reason that this video is in 4K is due to the 2.7K footage being upscaled to 4K. The main camera I used to shoot this video, an iPhone 7, was used to record native 4K footages to that is why those parts of the video look so crispy ;). As for camera settings, I just used the standard automatic settings and I didn’t change any color profiles or any other options in settings. Also, I didn’t add any color grading in post. This is just all videos directly from the drone itself.

How many yards can your drown go from where you are? When it’s about 100 feet above ground how detailed are the videosHow much does that drown cost? I’ve never had a drown.
This one in this video, the DJI Phantom 3 Standard, claims by DJI to have around a 1000m (3280ft). I’ve pushed that well over 1610m (5280ft) in a range test back in my day of checking out this drone. It DID cost $500, but it’s no longer in production so people price hike the heck out of this. I would suggest checking out the DJI Mavic Mini as an alternative as it’s smaller, has a ton more specs, and is pretty comparable in some aspects. You can find a comparison videos of them here on my channel.

Thanks for the great video Carson! Why does DJI have such a stupid auto-shutoff feature that can literally destroy your drone? (i.e.: when you accidentally move both joysticks outwards or inwards) Can that feature(?) be turned off in settings? TY! 🙂

That’s not a stupid feature at all! I have used it many times in an emergency. That feature is called the “CSC” command and is great for turning your props on if you’re manually taking off as well as shutting off the props in an emergency. To answer your question though, truthfully, I’m not sure about the DJI Phantom 3 Standard, but as far as newer DJI drones go, I always see the option to disable it in settings! I wouldn’t though! You will inevitably find yourself in an emergency situation and need it sometime!

Well most drones use an enhanced WiFi connection to the drone itself, but Im pretty sure you dont need an internet connection. This may not be with all drones tho

you didn’t explain that Autoland right going to get somebody in trouble the Autoland will land a drone right where it’s at maybe in a tree maybe in a pond but it comes down right where it’s at return to home is what you push to bring the aircraft back to its take off point

Yes, there are commercial reasons for wanting to have a drone such as making money with it if you have the right requirements and such but otherwise, there isn’t any real reason for needing one other than it being a fun hobby to have!

I have same problem. And once it goes sideways, its gone. It would be in a nother town by the time I would get to adjust any trim. Its so bad, it can not be just me being bad pilot. I gues it has bad sensor or something.

It’s a shame you didn’t TITLE this correctly; it’s definitely NOT “how to fly” nor for beginners. Beginners means, don’t assume viewers KNOW the accronyms you repeatedly use, nor did you show in detail, how to use the controls. Yes, you showed how to use photography but that’s not how you titled this. Maybe do an outline before-hand so you know where you’re going both with the video and the drone.

Need some advise, How do I focus the camera when on manual with the phantom3 standard? I have everything in focus except the moving subject, set the shutter speed to 1/1000 which should be quick enough to capture a moving subject when taking photos.

When calibrating your compass, you hold your drone horizontally and spin counter clockwise. Once complete, turn your drone’s nose face down, not sideways, and repeat your spin again until complete. I see cows! 😃

1st try – auto – up about 3 feet and drifted toward street- I could not get it back or make it land, almost hit by 2 cars , finally came down in yard 2 houses down
2nd try – manual take off, drifted toward fence, could not get it to auto land – it finally came down – not sure if I caused it or it did it on its own.
I am not using the cell phone (yet) and did not do a calibration –

That’s awesome! My advice would be to stay real safe with the Inspire 2 because it’s a very large drone and could really do some damage to itself/people/property if it crashes. It’s a really great drone considering it’s used in some movies! Fly safe man!

I am interested in purchasing my first Phantom, However I have NO idea “from whom” is the best to purchase from. IF there are issues or if it shows up damaged, who should I but it from: Amazon, DJI themselves, where?
I would highly recommend Amazon as their prices are (usually) always the cheapest and their return process is incredibly easy. Amazon has a 30 day return policy that if anything is damaged, missing, etc. then you can easily just return it in the box it came in. The DJI website is similar however, they only allow returns up to 14 days after you receive an item.
Whenever you choose to purchase, the packaging that mine came in was really sturdy so my guess is it’ll be fine. Hopefully this helps you out!

I can hear that you have this “whistle” sound from your motors/propellers. I have the same thing and it was like this from the first flight. I have only tryed the drone two times. Yeah the drone is pretty loud and you’ll need to be about 200 feet away for you to not hear it anymore. As for the DJI Phantom 3 Standard, there is NOT any obstacle avoidance but the Phantom SE, Advanced, Professional, and on up do! Thanks for watching!

DJI is the worst drone company ever… My 2 month old Phantom 4 malfunctioned and flew away, that was 6 months ago and DJI refuses to do anything !!! DJI has the ability to review my flight records at the time of the malfunction, they did and admit their drone did indeed malfunction. The drone ended up crashing in a spot that is not retrievable. I even purchased the DJI aftercare warranty, what a joke that is! I’ve done everything humanly possible to wake them up to do the right thing by replacing my drone, they have no shame, steer clear of them !!! They grew too quick and can’t keep up with customer service !!!

I thought that the highest you can fly is 400 feet (according to FAA)
The limit set by Government in UK recently is now 400ft (120M) You must also ensure you are 150M away from people, property and built-up areas. In other words they are making it almost impossible to fly (legally)
I’ve been up to 1,300 meters in the UK lol, almost hit a plane tho so there’s no way in hell I’m doing that again
IT ABSOLUTELY IS! Do NOT pass that 400ft height in the US because that would be violating the FAA regulations. The only reason that I said that in this video was because I knew people from all over the world would be watching this video and I’m not fluent in every other countries regulations so maybe it’s allowed there?😂 Not sure, but I just wanted to make sure the video could apply to everyone!

I’m thinking of using my drone (I’ve just bought it online), for security work. One question I have to the term “unobstructed”. I’d like to fly this drone around a large metal clad building in order to do a circuit.
Just so you know, I’ve bought a Phantom 3 advanced, as it was advertized as having a longer range, as well as an antenna booster.
But thanks to you video, I think I have the solution in that I’d just set the auto return to be higher than the building in question. SO another question. If I was currently flying below said height of the building when it loses connection, would it automatically go up to the preset height before returning?
Just bought a drone and only then did I think of the legal ramifications. Found out that Transport Canada has some stringent flight rules for the area I wanted to use it in. Still, I’ll be moving soon enough, hopefully to a less built up area.

Yep, it should! When you set the RTH height it will always go straight up to that height before it makes its first move back towards the RTH point 🙂

Make sure to take the videos from the SD card and not from your phone! That should fix the choppy-ness and grain issues 🙂

What if you pull down the left control for more than 3 secs, will it shut off the drone? Or just when you pull down both controls
Doing that will only shut off the drone when it touches down on the ground! When in the air, you can lock the left control to the bottom actually to descend quicker and then once you get down to the ground you probably would want to not have it pulled down all the way until you touch the ground and want to shut off the propellers.

Hi there Michael! You absolutely do not need WiFi internet connection at all for any DJI drone other than for the initial download of the DJI Go app, registering an account, and then if there is a firmware upgrade you’ll need it for that. Other than that, all you need is your phone which will directly attach to the controller via the lighting port!! Hope this helps:)

You’re fine! It may just be the location that you’re at. Are there electric poles near you when you’re at this water location? Maybe lots of WiFi signals? Either of these things can interfere with the drone itself in flight! Fly safe!

Nope! All you need is a WiFi connection to the drone controller WiFi itself and you’re all set! The only reason you ever need a data connection is for when you are wanting to update the firmware of the drone

Hi Ian! All of the DJI drones do not include a microphone in the camera as it would only result in loud propeller noise xD…The only way that a drone would have sound would maybe be if you put a GoPro onto a drone but even then, the sound wouldn’t sound good haha

No, RTH returns to the home location set on a map. It does this so that it can take the fastest path to the home point opposed to going through an entire flight again before actually getting to the home point 🙂

Max Tivey This one had a flaw. Someone had incorrectly inserted the SD card into the camera and it couldn’t be removed.
I’ve just bought a used one, knowingly, with only 2 flights on it. It came with extras like a backpack bag (soft-shell) and a set of ND filters included, and for A$200 less than the new price. I’m very happy with it.

A Phantom 3 Standard Remote Controller uses Wi-Fi to communicate with the AC. If you put your phone in Airplane Mode you are switching off Wi-Fi which would mean no control.
Yeah that’s true but as soon as you turn off airplane mode you can choose to turn on JUST WIFI if you’d like 🙂

Hi Noah! What I do is shoot every other video aspect of my videos from my iPhone 7+ and iPhone 6s in 4K. From the DJI Phantom 3 Standard itself, I shoot in 2.7K. After a video is all done recording, I import all of my footage into FCP (Final Cut Pro) X and set the project settings to 4K. After I’m done editing, I just simply export the video from FCP in 4K and voila, you’ve got a 4K video:). Hope this helps!!

Thank you for the video, I’m considering getting the Phantom 3 as a step-up from a cheap “toy” drone I’ve had for a while. I have a couple of questions, if I may:
1) is there any way to disable the “shut down in flight” function when pulling the sticks diagonally together, or at least set it so it needs to be done for a certain amount of time before it’s engaged? I understand it’s a kill switch, but it sounds a little terrifying that an accidental movement could turn it into a dropping stone. 🙂
2) What is the value shown in the app to the right of the vertical speed?

Hey there! Thanks so much for your reply, that’s quite reassuring about the shutdown maneuver. I suppose I’m very tentative because my experience with my Syma XC5-something has been frankly abysmal: that thing is very lightweight and sometimes gains altitude unexpectedly when being exposed to the wind (it’s actually called “wind bug” and it seems to be caused by a bug in the gyroscope firmware: instead of trying stabilizing itself into the wind, it tilts the other way round generating a sudden increase in lift) so I’ve often panicked with the controller! The Phantom 3 seems to be way easier to fly actually, and I suppose that being able to view what the drone is seeing also helps in orienteering when it’s turned backwards. Also thanks for the second answer, I had been wondering for weeks but nobody addressed that in any of the videos! Thanks again, you’re the king. 🙂
Hello Daniele! First off, I would definitely suggest the DJI Phantom 3 Standard as a step up from that toy drone xD. Also:
1.) No there isn’t any way to turn that off as it is used for emergencies and believe me you wouldn’t want it off…I myself have used the emergency shutoff function many times in crashing situations where if that wasn’t there, a crash may have been worse. I really haven’t ever run into any problems of accidentally descending, spinning right, turning left, and going backwards which is what would happen if you were able to put the controller sticks to the bottom right and bottom left corners if it wouldn’t shut off the motors. It just isn’t very likely so there shouldn’t be much to worry about haha.
2.) That would be the distance the drone is from the set return-to-home point of the drone.

1.) I have my iPhone plugged into my MacBook Pro to record my screen via Quicktime Player
2.) Yes it’s very easy to change in settings (in fact, when you first download the app, it actually is set to meters by default and you have to change it to miles later if you would like)
3.) The videos and photos you take are saved to both your mobile device as a lower quality and also in higher quality to a micro SD card on the camera of the drone itself. Hopefully this helps you out!

I typically leave my RTH altitude set to 40m (~131ft) which, around me, keeps the drone far clear of any obstacles such as trees and power lines. Hope this helps:)
You ever have any problems with the video quality? I have a brand new phantom and I’m using a iphone7 to connect and when I fly it the picture is in like 480p. It also has video lag.
33Airhead I think video lag depends on your phone /tablet the newer hence faster processor the better
I wouldn’t say I have had any problems but I have had the video feed drop before or it’s went to a low resolution such as 480p when flying long distances. If you’re having troubles getting a good image transmission from your drone to your phone during flight, there is a possibility that there is just a lot of interference near you such as many other WiFi signals. I would try moving far away from other WiFi signals and then try again and see if the image transmission improves.
P.S. – Don’t worry about how the final image will look when it’s been recorded to the SD housed on the camera on the drone. Even if you have a bad image transmission to your controller/phone, the video should still look great when you take another look at the videos stored on that SD card:)
what if you’re in the air, and you want to make your drone go left while you’re turning it left? It would just shut off and fall to its death? DJI didn’t think that through :/

Hi Avelino! Resetting the Standard to the factory default WiFi password is as simple as performing 3 steps. To do this, follow these steps:
1.) Turn on the controller.
2.) Turn gimbal dial [located on the left upper part of the controller] to the far right.
3.) While holding the gimbal dial in place, toggle the S2 switch back and forth at least 4 times.
After completing these 3 steps, the remote will sound a long beep and the bigger power LED should flash if the SSID and password for WiFi have been reset correctly. Now, you can just open up your device settings and connect to your Phantom’s WiFi signal with a default password of 12341234. You can change this password if you wish later in the DJI Mobile app.

In other situations such as camera batteries I would a lot of the time say yes but in this case of a DJI Phantom I would like to say no. Although they are cheaper and look nearly identical to the DJI made batteries, they don’t always deliver the full amount of power to the drone that it needs. Also, the non DJI batteries aren’t as “smart” as the DJI version most of the time and the smart functionality is best for safety and compatibility. If you’d like to risk losing your drone sometime possibly I would day you could go for after market batteries but if you’d like to play it safe, I’d say make sure to buy a DJI certified battery:) Hope this helps!!

Nope! If you have any problem such as this, for one that’s not good😬 but two I would suggest replacing the props and calibrating the IMU and then try taking off again

I use an app called AZ Screen Recorder… on my phone and tablet. It allows me to record the screen with all the telemetry…. then I use a video editor to clean it up…. (to delete the footage of warm up, calibration…ugh)… but it works very well… no wires !
The cable going from my phone is just for recording purposes…it is plugged into my iPhone and then I plugged that into my computer so then I could record my screen:/…sadly, only some of the higher up DJI quadcopters support plugging your phone into the controller itself.

The battery typically only lasts me around 20-22 minutes before I have to land due to the battery being below 10%. I would suggest buying a second or third battery only if a.) you need a longer recording time and b.) asa long as you don’t plan on buying a Phantom 4 anytime soon as the batteries are roughly the same price (around $100) and they aren’t compatible with each other. :/

Thank you! Also, to answer your questions , I typically get around 20-22 minutes of flight time. For a new battery, the price is typically $90+ (I don’t currently know the price just check on Amazon). The charger does come with the drone. Lastly, to charge the drone battery fully it usually takes around 1hr20min – 1hr30min and for the controller it takes typically around 2 hours but, the controller stays charged for 5+ flights or longer.

The reason I had a cable plugged into my phone while flying was so that I could capture my phone screen on my computer:). You could, however still be charging your phone while flying as it shouldn’t affect anything.

We live on the crest of a hill, and I am actually a lot higher than the trees in front. Our last name is Hall, so I named our Christmas tree business Hallcrest.
This drone flies quite high, and I did connect it up to my laptop, and I can see pretty darn far. I live in a very rural area, and no one talks to each other. This gets me out of the house, but living in Washington state it rains 98% of the time, and I do not like standing in the rain. I even tried it from the garage with the big door open, but my signal is not as good. It will take some time to get used to this drone, but it is fun trying.
With this antenna the video range will actually be longer than the drone control range (varies by drone)
You welcome ^_^. Actually I am drone newbie myself but I can think of any Ideas. The trees will weaken the signal of the drone… in this particular setup I might use flat panel antenna like this one :MS2415P. Range around 5 km. The only drawback is that you’d have to aim it at the part of the field the drone is flying at or ofcourse the drone itself. Options are limitless. I’ts up to you and the budget.

I am dying to get this thing working and being able to see what is going on in the Christmas tree fields, as we have over 10 acres of Noble, Frasier, and Grands which are fir trees. That way when my crew arrives I can tell them exactly what rows need to be worked on instead of having to walk all over the place. I do use a small tractor to check the rows, but with the drone it will be a lot easier. You might get a chuckle out of this one, but with my drone I can check on a neighbor that I am sure has pot growing in their huge barn. Not sure of that but if you like taking the risk of falling phone here is what I do:
1 Samsung GT S5360 (a.k.a Young) attached the drone and phone or laptop to use as screen.
Using an app called “IP Webcam” installed on the GT S5360 I can view live video feed trough the camera and even take pics. Enabling WiFi hotspot (tethering) enables me to share that video feed and connect as much devices (screens) as I want. Pros and cons:
+ See footage live on more than one device
+ Take Pics/Focused pics, Zoom In/Out, Use flashlight,
+ This app had night vision i guess ???
+ You can extend range with cheap WiFi antenna on ground.
– So much WiFi can interfere with the drone controls and cause flyaway.
– Risk of rain of phone (Ur phone goes down like a rock )

Why is your altitude set to 500 meters when the legal height is 400 feet?
The height of which is legal to fly is based on local regulations…check your local laws to find out what is and what isn’t legal when flying your drone. For me, I live out in the country where very few planes ever pass over and if there are any they are commercial planes opposed to lower flying small planes.

+Lewis Andrews Sadly, with the Phantom 3 Standard controller you can’t use an iPad on the controller without modding it due to the phone holder only working as a phone holder…modding is pretty simple though just look up on youtube, “Phantom 3 Standard Controller Mod” and some videos should come up:)

+Tyrone Patterson Nope it’s not plugged into the controller it’s plugged into my Macbook Pro so that i can record my iPhone screen haha…also no there is nowhere on the DJI P3 controllers to plug in USB to the phone (that only exists on the P4 and up because of light bridge technology)…and finally, yes I believe you can although I haven’t fully tried it before I don’t see why not but, I would highly suggest against doing so because you won’t be able to tell the stats of the drone such as the battery %, ATT, Distance, etc. and also if you’d ever need to RTH then it would be more difficult without the phone.
